USB flash drive: An introduction

In the year 2000, first USB flash drives were sold commercially by IBM and USB connector trek technology. A USB flash drive can be defined as a miniature storage device. It measures your thumb size (1-4 inches long). This flash drive is removable and rewritable. The capacity of this drive may range from about 64MB to 64GB. The price usually varies with the capacity as well as different features included with the drive. This drive typically consists of flash memory data storage device that’s further integrated with either a USB 1.1 or USB (universal serial Bus) 2.0 interface.

The basic usage of USB flash drive is similar to what floppy disks were used for. This drive is actually a high speed serial communication protocol utilize for establishing communication between the PC and USB flash drive. The whole process of connecting as well as disconnecting a USB flash drive is quite simple.

The best part is that these are smaller faster and possess almost thousands of times more capacity. These are also many times more durable and extremely reliable as they don’t have moving parts. This drive can be easily connected to the PC via plugging it in to the USB port. You don’t require getting in to the hassles of using different connectors or power cables.

The windows operating system that runs a PC indicates the presence of the drive in the form of an icon as soon as a USB flash drive is connected to the PC. This icon is displayed in the PC’s system tray.

A lot of people tend to pull out the drive as soon as they are through with their job. However, this is not advisable at all. It is important to stop the drive prior to disconnecting it. Just right click the mouse over the icon of USB drive displayed in the system tray & stop the device. As soon as you receive the message that asks you to disconnect the drive safely.

For a computer, a USB flash is similar to a hard disk. It allows you to perform all sorts of actions that would usually be performed in a hard disk. This may include movement of file, modification of file, saving of data, deleting of data & for matting.Usually, USB flash drives are available with FAT 32 file system. However, they can be easily formatted to function with any kind of operating system to support them.

However, it is not recommended to defrayment a USB flash drive. The reason is that it does not give any kind of enhancement in performance. This may also result in decreasing the overall life of the drive. The basic reason is that the drive utilizes EEPROM storage. This can be written only for a fixed number of times and the process of erasing & rewriting the data during defragmenting will actually decrease the life of the drive.

Any data stored in a USB flash drive can be reliably stored for up to two years. These are quite sturdy in nature & dropping them usually do not result in loss of data.
